Want a different size or wood?
Choose your wood
Walnut
Dark chocolate with a purple undertone. Our most requested.
White Oak
Pale gold, open grain, and one of the hardest wearing options.
Maple
Light and smooth with a clean appearance suited to a modern look.
Ash
Pronounced grain with a light natural tone and plenty of character.
Alder
Warm, even coloring with a softer grain and a naturally relaxed look.
How to choose an end table
An end table is judged on two things: whether it sits at the right height next to your seating, and whether it is the right size for the space it has to fit. Style and species come after both.
What height should an end table be?
Match the arm of the sofa or chair it sits beside, or come within a couple of inches of it. Most sofa arms fall between 24 and 26 inches, which is why most end tables land in the same range. A table noticeably lower than the arm means reaching down for a drink, and one that stands above it looks like it belongs to a different set of furniture. If your seating has no arms, use the seat cushion height instead and go a few inches above it.
What size and shape suits the space?
Between two chairs, or at the end of a sofa with a walkway behind, a round table earns its place: there are no corners to catch a hip and it reads smaller than a square top of the same width. Against a wall or in a corner, a square or rectangular top uses the space better and gives you more surface for a lamp and everything that collects beside it.
Leave enough room to walk past. If the gap between the table and the nearest piece of furniture drops below about 18 inches, the room starts to feel tight regardless of how well the table itself fits.
How the tables are built
Solid hardwood throughout, with no veneer over particleboard, joined and finished by hand rather than flat-packed. The tops are sanded through progressive grits and finished in a hardwax oil that leaves the grain visible and can be repaired in place rather than stripped.
Which wood is best for an end table?
Not sure which to choose? Each species has its own color, grain pattern and character. The best choice depends on the look you want, how prominent you want the grain to be, and how the table will be used. The hardness figures below are Janka ratings, the standard measure of a wood's resistance to denting, and they vary widely across the five.
| Wood species | Color | Grain | Hardness | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maple | Pale cream to light blonde | Fine and understated | 1,450 Janka. The hardest of the five and the most dent resistant | Clean, modern and minimalist spaces |
| White Oak | Light tan to golden brown | Strong, visible grain | 1,360 Janka. Hard wearing and the most moisture resistant of the five | Traditional, transitional, Scandinavian and modern interiors |
| Ash | Light cream to pale brown | Bold, pronounced grain | 1,320 Janka. Strong and shock resistant, close behind white oak | Rooms where you want the natural grain to stand out |
| Walnut | Rich chocolate brown with warm and subtle purple undertones | Generally straight with natural variation | 1,010 Janka. Softer than the oaks and maples, though the deep color hides marks well | Warm, refined interiors and darker furniture schemes |
| Alder | Pale honey to light reddish brown | Fine, even and subtle | 590 Janka. The softest of the five, so it marks more readily with everyday use | Stained finishes, lighter tables, and rooms where an even tone matters more than hardness |
White Oak
Ash
Walnut
Alder
Because solid wood is a natural material, no two boards will look exactly the same. Grain pattern, tone and color variation are part of the character of each finished table. Two things worth planning for: walnut lightens rather than darkens as it ages, unlike most hardwoods, and alder takes stain more evenly than any of the others, which is why it is often chosen when a specific color is the priority.
Shaker, mission or minimalist?
- Shaker is the quietest of the three. Tapered legs, clean lines, no ornament, and a shape that has been in American homes for two centuries without dating. It sits comfortably beside almost any sofa, which is why it is the safest choice in a room you may redecorate around.
- Mission is heavier and more architectural, built on straight vertical lines and visible structure. It comes from the Arts and Crafts tradition and it suits rooms with some weight to them: leather seating, darker palettes, older houses. In white oak, which is where the style began, it is the most traditional thing we make.
- Minimalist round strips the piece back to a top and its support. No corners, no detail, nothing to read except the grain, which makes species choice matter more here than in either of the others. It works best in lighter rooms and beside lower, more modern seating.
Mixed species pieces sit across all three. A walnut and maple table gives you two tones in one piece and lets the design rather than the finish carry the contrast.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.

End Table Questions
Are these made to order?
Yes. Everything here can be built in any of the species we work in, at a height and width to suit your room. Send the height of your sofa arm and the space you have and we will build to it.
Can I get one in a different size or wood?
Yes. Everything here can be built in any of the species we work in, at a height and width to suit your room. Send the height of your sofa arm and the space you have and we will build to it.
Is it solid wood or veneer?
Solid hardwood, all the way through. Most end tables at this price are particleboard or MDF with a printed surface, which is why they swell when something spills and cannot be repaired when the edge chips. Ours can be sanded and refinished for as long as you own them.
Does it arrive assembled?
Wherever the piece allows, yes. End tables are small enough that most go out fully assembled and ready to put down beside the sofa. On the occasional piece where the size or the design makes that impractical, the base ships separately with the hardware needed to attach it, and we will tell you which before it leaves.
How do I care for a solid wood end table?
Wipe spills as they happen and use a coaster under cold drinks, since a glass left to sweat is the most common cause of a ring on any small table. Avoid household polishes containing silicone, which leave a residue that makes future repairs harder. A polish every few months keeps the surface right, and if the top does get marked, a hardwax oil finish can be repaired in place rather than stripped.
