Figured Walnut End Table | Dark Heartwood, 16" x 12"
Figured Walnut End Table | Dark Heartwood, 16" x 12"
Solid figured walnut, dark the whole way through, with the curl and flame that only turns up in selected boards. 16 inches tall and 12 inches square, on splayed legs braced with stretchers. Rubio Monocoat finish.
- Solid hardwood every time
- Handmade to order
- Securely shipped

Figured walnut is the grade above ordinary walnut. Same species, but selected for the boards where the grain does something unusual: curl, flame, feather, the three-dimensional shimmer woodworkers call chatoyance, which moves as you walk past it.
This one is dark the whole way through, heartwood from the centre of the log rather than the paler wood nearer the bark, so the figure reads as depth inside a chocolate brown top rather than as contrast across it. Splayed legs braced with stretchers, 16 inches tall, 12 inches square.
Finished in Rubio Monocoat, a plant-based hardwax oil that bonds into the wood fibre instead of sitting on top of it as a film. It leaves a matte surface that feels like wood rather than like varnish, and it is repairable in place. Handmade in our Chattanooga workshop.
An end table takes a different kind of punishment from a dining table. Almost no weight, but wet glasses, hot mugs, keys dropped on it and a lamp that never moves.
- Use a coaster. A wet glass left standing on a hardwax oil finish will leave a ring. It is the single most common mark on a side table and the easiest one to avoid.
- A damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine. No all purpose spray, no furniture polish, and nothing with silicone in it: silicone polishes make a later repair harder than the mark you were covering up.
- Keep the figure out of direct sun. Walnut lightens under sunlight rather than darkening, and on a figured top the fade is uneven, because the curl takes light differently from the straight grain around it.
- Move the lamp occasionally. A base that sits in one place for years shields the wood under it and leaves a dark disc behind when it finally moves.
- It is a table, not a seat and not a step. It will take a lamp, a stack of books and a drink without complaint. It will not take a person.
- Re-oil once a year. Rubio Monocoat is repairable in place, so a scuff spot-oils by hand rather than needing the whole top refinished.
- Do not sand figured walnut yourself if it gets marked. Curl and flame mean the grain changes direction across the face, so sanding lifts it in some places and flattens it in others, and the figure you paid for is the first thing to go. Spot-oil instead, or send it back to us.

Walnut is a premium hardwood with a deep brown tone and a naturally rich, warm look. Its grain tends to be smooth and flowing, with occasional lighter streaks that add natural contrast. Walnut feels substantial and refined, making it a popular choice for statement tabletops.
It holds up well to everyday use and finishes with a soft, high-end sheen. Over time, walnut may lighten slightly with exposure to sunlight, settling into a more even, mellow brown. If you want a classic, upscale look that isn’t overly busy, walnut is a strong choice.
| Color | Rich chocolate brown with warm and subtle purple undertones |
|---|---|
| Grain | Generally straight with natural variation |
| Hardness | 1,010 Janka. Softer than the oaks and maples, though the deep color hides marks well |
| Best for | Warm, refined interiors and darker furniture schemes |
Every piece is made to order, so each one is built for you after you order it and cannot be resold to anyone else. For that reason we cannot accept returns or cancellations for a change of mind once work has begun, and payment is taken in full up front. If you need to change anything about your order, tell us before we start and we will do what we can.
Check your piece as soon as it arrives. If it is damaged in transit, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photographs of both the piece and the packaging, and we will repair it, remake it or refund you. Keep the packaging until the matter is settled, since claims are harder to make without it.
If something is wrong with the workmanship itself, tell us within 7 days of delivery and we will put it right. We built the piece and we would rather fix it than have it sit in your house annoying you. Repairs to a hardwax oil finish can usually be done in place, and where they cannot, we will take the piece back. Return shipping is on us.
Some things are not faults. Solid wood varies in grain and color from board to board, so your piece will not match its photograph exactly, and it will shift in tone over the first year or two as the wood reacts to light. It also expands and contracts slightly with the seasons. All of that is the material behaving as it should, and it is the reason a solid piece lasts decades longer than a veneered one.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.
