Want a different size or wood?
Choose your wood
Walnut
Dark chocolate with a purple undertone. Our most requested.
White Oak
Pale gold, open grain, and one of the hardest wearing options.
Maple
Light and smooth with a clean appearance suited to a modern look.
Ash
Pronounced grain with a light natural tone and plenty of character.
Alder
Warm, even coloring with a softer grain and a naturally relaxed look.
How to choose a solid wood dining table
The three decisions that matter are size, shape and species. Everything else, from edge profile to base style to finish sheen, can be changed later without affecting the price much.
What size dining table do I need?
Allow 24 inches of table edge per person and at least 36 inches of clearance between the table and the nearest wall so chairs can pull out. A 72-inch rectangular top seats six comfortably and eight when pushed, a 48-inch round seats four, and a 60-inch round seats six. Most tops stand 29 to 30 inches high. A width of 36 to 40 inches suits seating along the sides, and 42 inches is the minimum if you want a chair at each end.
How the tables are built
Tops are edge-glued from boards selected for grain match, never veneer over particleboard, then flattened, sanded to 220 grit and finished with a hardwax oil that can be spot-repaired rather than stripped. Bases are mortise-and-tenon joined. Extension leaves run on steel slides rated for the top's weight.
Which wood is best for a dining table?
Not sure which to choose? Each species has its own color, grain pattern and character. The best choice depends on the look you want, how prominent you want the grain to be, and how the table will be used. The hardness figures below are Janka ratings, the standard measure of a wood's resistance to denting, and they vary widely across the five.
| Wood species | Color | Grain | Hardness | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maple | Pale cream to light blonde | Fine and understated | 1,450 Janka. The hardest of the five and the most dent resistant | Clean, modern and minimalist spaces |
| White Oak | Light tan to golden brown | Strong, visible grain | 1,360 Janka. Hard wearing and the most moisture resistant of the five | Traditional, transitional, Scandinavian and modern interiors |
| Ash | Light cream to pale brown | Bold, pronounced grain | 1,320 Janka. Strong and shock resistant, close behind white oak | Rooms where you want the natural grain to stand out |
| Walnut | Rich chocolate brown with warm and subtle purple undertones | Generally straight with natural variation | 1,010 Janka. Softer than the oaks and maples, though the deep color hides marks well | Warm, refined interiors and darker furniture schemes |
| Alder | Pale honey to light reddish brown | Fine, even and subtle | 590 Janka. The softest of the five, so it marks more readily with everyday use | Stained finishes, lighter tables, and rooms where an even tone matters more than hardness |
White Oak
Ash
Walnut
Alder
Because solid wood is a natural material, no two boards will look exactly the same. Grain pattern, tone and color variation are part of the character of each finished table. Two things worth planning for: walnut lightens rather than darkens as it ages, unlike most hardwoods, and alder takes stain more evenly than any of the others, which is why it is often chosen when a specific color is the priority.
Which dining table shape should you choose?
Rectangular tables use a room most efficiently and are the easier choice when the room itself is long, or when the table sits against a run of cabinetry. They also take extension leaves more readily.
Round tables suit square rooms and smaller spaces, and they put everyone in the same conversation, which is why they tend to get chosen for kitchens and for households that eat together every night. The trade-off is that seating capacity climbs slowly: going from a 48-inch round to a 60-inch round adds two seats but takes a foot more floor space in every direction.
Oval tops are the compromise. They seat close to what a rectangle of the same length seats, with no corners to catch a hip in a tight walkway.
If you are choosing between a round and a rectangular table for the same room, measure the walkway on the tightest side first. That measurement decides it more often than the look does.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.

Dining Table Questions
How long is the lead time?
Yes, and most of what we build is custom. Every table is made to order, so length, width, shape and thickness are all specified rather than picked from a list.
To quote we need four things: the size, the wood, the design, and where it is going. Most custom dining tables land between $2,000 and $10,000, driven mainly by species, base and any inlay work.
We send a render before anything is cut so you can see the piece before we build it. Payment is taken in full up front, and once a custom build has started it cannot be changed or cancelled.
Can I get a custom size?
Yes, and most of what we build is custom. Every table is made to order, so length, width, shape and thickness are all specified rather than picked from a list.
To quote we need four things: the size, the wood, the design, and where it is going. Most custom dining tables land between $2,000 and $10,000, driven mainly by species, base and any inlay work.

How many people will a dining table seat?
Allow 24 inches of table edge per person. The three sizes we build most often:
- 72" x 36" seats six, and suits a room from 12ft x 9ft
- 96" x 36" seats eight, and suits a room from 14ft x 9ft
- 120" x 36" seats ten, and suits a room from 16ft x 9ft
What people get wrong is the clearance rather than the table. You need 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture so a chair can pull back with someone able to pass behind it, which is what the room sizes above allow for.
Every table is built to order, so if none of those dimensions suits your room we will build to the ones that do.
Will the table arrive assembled?
It arrives finished and ready to use. We build a plywood crate around every piece ourselves and ship by freight with ABF or ESTES, which means delivery to your driveway rather than into the house.
Nobody carries it in for you, so have a second pair of hands ready on the day, since a dining table top is heavy and awkward for one person. Where a base is included we supply the screws and drill bit to mount it.
We do not offer an assembly or installation service.
How do I care for a hardwood table?
Every piece is finished in a hardwax oil, either Rubio Monocoat or Odie's Oil depending on the piece, and both are food safe.
Wipe spills as they happen, use a trivet under anything hot, and avoid household polishes containing silicone, which leave a residue that makes future repairs harder. A polish every few months keeps the surface looking right.
If a top does get marked or worn, a hardwax oil finish can be repaired in place rather than stripped, and we can refinish a piece for you if it ever needs it.
