Oval Walnut Dining Table | Solid Hardwood, Made to Order
Oval Walnut Dining Table | Solid Hardwood, Made to Order
An oval hardwood top on a base cut from the same boards, so top and base match in tone and grain. Nine size combinations from 60 by 36 inches to 84 by 48, in five hardwoods.
- Solid hardwood every time
- Handmade to order
- Securely shipped

An oval sits between a rectangle and a round. It gives you the length and the usable surface of a rectangular table without the corners, which softens the room and makes it easier to get past when the chairs are occupied.
The base is the part worth noticing. It is cut from the same species as the top rather than made of metal, so the whole piece is one material and the colour carries all the way down. That is more work and it is what makes a table look built rather than assembled.
Five hardwoods. Walnut is the dark, formal one and the reason most people come looking. White oak is harder wearing and cleaner in tone. Ash runs lighter with more movement in the grain. Alder is warm and the gentlest on the budget. Maple is the brightest, though it can take stain unevenly, so it is at its best left clear.
Every top is cut from real boards, so the grain and the character marks belong to your table alone.
A dining table takes more daily punishment than anything else in the house, and on this one the base takes the same finish as the top, so treat both the same.
- Wipe spills when they happen. It is standing water rather than the spill that marks a hardwax oil finish.
- Trivets under hot dishes, coasters under cold glasses. Heat and condensation are the two things that leave a mark.
- A damp cloth is all it needs. No all-purpose spray, no oil soap, nothing with silicone in it.
- Do not forget the base. It is hardwood with the same finish, and the feet and lower rails get mopped, kicked and scuffed more than people expect.
- Hardwax oil is repairable. A scuff or a dull patch spot-oils by hand without refinishing the whole top.
- Re-oil the areas that see plates every year or two so the sheen stays even.
- Keep it out of direct sun and away from a heating vent, both of which dry wood unevenly.

Walnut is a premium hardwood with a deep brown tone and a naturally rich, warm look. Its grain tends to be smooth and flowing, with occasional lighter streaks that add natural contrast. Walnut feels substantial and refined, making it a popular choice for statement tabletops.
It holds up well to everyday use and finishes with a soft, high-end sheen. Over time, walnut may lighten slightly with exposure to sunlight, settling into a more even, mellow brown. If you want a classic, upscale look that isn’t overly busy, walnut is a strong choice.
| Color | Rich chocolate brown with warm and subtle purple undertones |
|---|---|
| Grain | Generally straight with natural variation |
| Hardness | 1,010 Janka. Softer than the oaks and maples, though the deep color hides marks well |
| Best for | Warm, refined interiors and darker furniture schemes |

White oak is known for its clean, modern look and strong, confident grain. Its color ranges from light tan to medium brown, and it works especially well in contemporary, farmhouse, or Scandinavian-style spaces. White oak is a durable wood choice for daily use, and it holds up well over time.
The grain can be straight and subtle or more dramatic, depending on the cut, but it generally feels refined rather than rustic. White oak also takes stain well if you want a specific tone. It’s a great all-around option when you want strength and a timeless appearance.
| Color | Light tan to golden brown |
|---|---|
| Grain | Strong, visible grain |
| Hardness | 1,360 Janka. Hard wearing and the most moisture resistant of the group |
| Best for | Traditional, transitional, Scandinavian and modern interiors |

Ash is pale, strong and boldly grained, with the most pronounced figure of the light woods. Its color runs from light cream to a pale brown, and the grain pattern is open and easy to read from across a room.
It suits pieces where you want the timber itself to be the decoration rather than a quiet background, and it is hard wearing enough for daily use. Ash also takes stain well if you want the grain without the pale tone.
| Color | Light cream to pale brown |
|---|---|
| Grain | Bold, pronounced grain |
| Hardness | 1,320 Janka. Strong and shock resistant, close behind white oak |
| Best for | Rooms where you want the natural grain to stand out |

Alder is the softest hardwood we work in and the most even in tone, running from pale honey to a light reddish brown with very little variation board to board. Its grain is fine and subtle, so it reads as a calm, uniform surface rather than a textured one.
It takes stain more consistently than any of the other woods, which is why it is often chosen when a specific color matters more than raw hardness. Being softer, it will pick up marks more readily with everyday use.
| Color | Pale honey to light reddish brown |
|---|---|
| Grain | Fine, even and subtle |
| Hardness | 590 Janka. The softest hardwood here, so it marks more readily |
| Best for | Stained finishes and pieces where an even tone matters most |

Maple is a light, bright hardwood with a smooth, subtle grain that gives a clean, minimal look. It’s a good choice if you want the tabletop to feel crisp and modern, or if you’re pairing it with darker bases and want contrast.
Maple is known for being hard and resistant to everyday wear, making it practical for busy spaces. Its appearance is usually even and consistent, though some boards may show natural figuring that adds interest without being too bold. If you prefer a lighter wood that feels simple, clean, and durable, maple is an excellent pick.
| Color | Pale cream to light blonde |
|---|---|
| Grain | Fine and understated |
| Hardness | 1,450 Janka. The hardest of the pale woods here and the most dent resistant of them |
| Best for | Clean, modern and minimalist spaces |
Every piece is made to order, so each one is built for you after you order it and cannot be resold to anyone else. For that reason we cannot accept returns or cancellations for a change of mind once work has begun, and payment is taken in full up front. If you need to change anything about your order, tell us before we start and we will do what we can.
Check your piece as soon as it arrives. If it is damaged in transit, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photographs of both the piece and the packaging, and we will repair it, remake it or refund you. Keep the packaging until the matter is settled, since claims are harder to make without it.
If something is wrong with the workmanship itself, tell us within 7 days of delivery and we will put it right. We built the piece and we would rather fix it than have it sit in your house annoying you. Repairs to a hardwax oil finish can usually be done in place, and where they cannot, we will take the piece back. Return shipping is on us.
Some things are not faults. Solid wood varies in grain and color from board to board, so your piece will not match its photograph exactly, and it will shift in tone over the first year or two as the wood reacts to light. It also expands and contracts slightly with the seasons. All of that is the material behaving as it should, and it is the reason a solid piece lasts decades longer than a veneered one.
Full details in our Refund Policy.
Want a different size or wood?
Will this size work in your room?
Two checks before you order. Leave at least 36 inches between the table edge and the nearest wall or furniture, so a chair can pull back with someone able to walk behind it. The quick version: subtract 72 inches from your room's length and width, and what is left is the largest table that fits comfortably. A room measuring 12ft by 10ft takes a table up to 72 inches by 48 inches.
How many it seats
| Length | Seats |
|---|---|
| 60" | Up to 6 |
| 72" | 6 to 8 |
| 84" | 8 |
| 96" | 8 to 10 |
| 108" | 10 |
| 120" | 10 to 12 |
How wide to go
| Width | Suits |
|---|---|
| 36" | Narrower dining rooms and smaller spaces |
| 42" | The versatile everyday width, with comfortable place settings |
| 48" | Larger rooms, wider settings and a more substantial presence |
Based on 24 inches of table edge per person. Chairs with arms take more room than that suggests, so measure yours before choosing between two sizes.
Width changes how the table feels rather than how many people fit.
If none of these sizes suits your room, we build to the dimensions that do.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.
