Walnut and Maple End Table | Solid Wood, 16" x 12"
Walnut and Maple End Table | Solid Wood, 16" x 12"
A small end table with a striped top of alternating walnut and maple, 16 inches tall and 12 inches square. Four legs braced with stretchers, solid wood throughout. Sized for a sofa arm or a tight corner.
- Solid hardwood every time
- Handmade to order
- Securely shipped

The striped top is made by gluing up alternating strips of walnut and maple, dark against cream, so the pattern runs through the thickness of the wood rather than being laid on the surface. It is the same technique as a butcher block, done at a scale where every strip shows.
16 inches tall and 12 inches square, on four legs braced with stretchers near the floor. That bracing is the reason a table this small stays rigid: the stretchers triangulate the legs so the joints at the top are not doing all the work on their own.
Sofa-arm height, which makes this a drink-and-a-book table rather than a lamp table. Solid wood throughout, finished by hand in Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C. If you want the same table in a single species, or at a different height, we build to order.
An end table takes a different kind of punishment from a dining table. Almost no weight, but wet glasses, hot mugs, keys dropped on it and a lamp that never moves.
- Use a coaster. A wet glass left standing on a hardwax oil finish will leave a ring, and on a striped top a ring crosses both woods and shows twice as clearly.
- A damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine. No all purpose spray, no furniture polish, and nothing with silicone in it: silicone polishes make a later repair harder than the mark you were covering up.
- Two woods in one top move at slightly different rates, which is normal and is why the glue lines are cut the way they are. Keep it out of a draught from a radiator or an air vent and it will stay flat.
- Move the lamp occasionally. Walnut lightens under sunlight rather than darkening, so anything left in one place for years leaves a dark patch behind it.
- It is a table, not a seat and not a step. It will take a lamp, a stack of books and a drink without complaint. It will not take a person.
- Re-oil once a year. Rubio Monocoat is repairable in place, so a scuff spot-oils by hand rather than needing the whole top refinished.
- The maple will yellow slightly with age and the walnut will lighten. The stripe softens over the years rather than sharpening.

Walnut is a premium hardwood with a deep brown tone and a naturally rich, warm look. Its grain tends to be smooth and flowing, with occasional lighter streaks that add natural contrast. Walnut feels substantial and refined, making it a popular choice for statement tabletops.
It holds up well to everyday use and finishes with a soft, high-end sheen. Over time, walnut may lighten slightly with exposure to sunlight, settling into a more even, mellow brown. If you want a classic, upscale look that isn’t overly busy, walnut is a strong choice.
| Color | Rich chocolate brown with warm and subtle purple undertones |
|---|---|
| Grain | Generally straight with natural variation |
| Hardness | 1,010 Janka. Softer than the oaks and maples, though the deep color hides marks well |
| Best for | Warm, refined interiors and darker furniture schemes |

Maple is a light, bright hardwood with a smooth, subtle grain that gives a clean, minimal look. It’s a good choice if you want the tabletop to feel crisp and modern, or if you’re pairing it with darker bases and want contrast.
Maple is known for being hard and resistant to everyday wear, making it practical for busy spaces. Its appearance is usually even and consistent, though some boards may show natural figuring that adds interest without being too bold. If you prefer a lighter wood that feels simple, clean, and durable, maple is an excellent pick.
| Color | Pale cream to light blonde |
|---|---|
| Grain | Fine and understated |
| Hardness | 1,450 Janka. The hardest of the pale woods here and the most dent resistant of them |
| Best for | Clean, modern and minimalist spaces |
Every piece is made to order, so each one is built for you after you order it and cannot be resold to anyone else. For that reason we cannot accept returns or cancellations for a change of mind once work has begun, and payment is taken in full up front. If you need to change anything about your order, tell us before we start and we will do what we can.
Check your piece as soon as it arrives. If it is damaged in transit, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photographs of both the piece and the packaging, and we will repair it, remake it or refund you. Keep the packaging until the matter is settled, since claims are harder to make without it.
If something is wrong with the workmanship itself, tell us within 7 days of delivery and we will put it right. We built the piece and we would rather fix it than have it sit in your house annoying you. Repairs to a hardwax oil finish can usually be done in place, and where they cannot, we will take the piece back. Return shipping is on us.
Some things are not faults. Solid wood varies in grain and color from board to board, so your piece will not match its photograph exactly, and it will shift in tone over the first year or two as the wood reacts to light. It also expands and contracts slightly with the seasons. All of that is the material behaving as it should, and it is the reason a solid piece lasts decades longer than a veneered one.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.
