Mission Style Oak End Table | Drawer and Shelf, Quarter Sawn White Oak
Mission Style Oak End Table | Drawer and Shelf, Quarter Sawn White Oak
A mission style end table in quarter sawn white oak, with slatted sides, a lower shelf and a drawer on a black metal pull. Finished by hand in Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C. Built to the original proportions.
- Solid hardwood every time
- Handmade to order
- Securely shipped

Mission furniture came out of the American Arts and Crafts movement and it follows one rule: show the structure. Slatted sides instead of solid panels, visible joinery, straight lines, and no ornament that is not also doing a job. It is why a mission piece still looks deliberate a century later rather than dated.
Quarter sawn white oak is the wood the original mission pieces were built from, and not for looks alone. Cut that way the growth rings run edge to edge through the board, which is what produces the ray fleck across the face, and it is also the most stable cut there is: it moves least across its width, so a drawer that fits in January still fits in July.
A drawer on a black metal pull, a lower shelf beneath it, and a hand-applied Rubio Monocoat Oil Plus 2C finish. White oak is closed grained, its pores blocked by tyloses, which is why it was the wood used for barrels and why it handles a wet glass better than red oak does. Handmade in our Chattanooga workshop.
This is the most forgiving piece in the range. White oak near water is about as safe as hardwood gets, and quarter sawn stock is the least likely to move. The drawer is the one part worth thinking about.
- If the drawer starts to bind in humid weather, that is the wood swelling and it is normal. Rub a candle stub or a block of paraffin wax along the runners and it will slide again. Never take sandpaper to it: come the dry season you will have a loose drawer instead of a tight one.
- Still use a coaster. Closed grain and a hardwax oil finish mean white oak shrugs off a spill, but standing water left overnight will still mark the surface.
- A damp cloth is the whole cleaning routine. No all purpose spray, no furniture polish, and nothing with silicone in it: silicone polishes make a later repair harder than the mark you were covering up.
- The slats need a brush, not a cloth. A soft paintbrush or a vacuum brush head gets the dust out of the gaps between them, which a duster only pushes further in.
- White oak warms to a deeper honey tone over the first few years, evenly and slowly. Nothing to manage, but worth knowing if you are matching it to something already in the room.
- Do not use an oil soap on it, whatever the bottle says about oak. Those products are built for film finishes and they leave a residue on a hardwax oil that has to come off before the piece can be re-oiled.
- Re-oil the top and the shelf once a year. Rubio Monocoat is repairable in place, so a scuff spot-oils by hand rather than needing the whole piece refinished.

White oak is known for its clean, modern look and strong, confident grain. Its color ranges from light tan to medium brown, and it works especially well in contemporary, farmhouse, or Scandinavian-style spaces. White oak is a durable wood choice for daily use, and it holds up well over time.
The grain can be straight and subtle or more dramatic, depending on the cut, but it generally feels refined rather than rustic. White oak also takes stain well if you want a specific tone. It’s a great all-around option when you want strength and a timeless appearance.
| Color | Light tan to golden brown |
|---|---|
| Grain | Strong, visible grain |
| Hardness | 1,360 Janka. Hard wearing and the most moisture resistant of the group |
| Best for | Traditional, transitional, Scandinavian and modern interiors |
Every piece is made to order, so each one is built for you after you order it and cannot be resold to anyone else. For that reason we cannot accept returns or cancellations for a change of mind once work has begun, and payment is taken in full up front. If you need to change anything about your order, tell us before we start and we will do what we can.
Check your piece as soon as it arrives. If it is damaged in transit, contact us within 48 hours of delivery with photographs of both the piece and the packaging, and we will repair it, remake it or refund you. Keep the packaging until the matter is settled, since claims are harder to make without it.
If something is wrong with the workmanship itself, tell us within 7 days of delivery and we will put it right. We built the piece and we would rather fix it than have it sit in your house annoying you. Repairs to a hardwax oil finish can usually be done in place, and where they cannot, we will take the piece back. Return shipping is on us.
Some things are not faults. Solid wood varies in grain and color from board to board, so your piece will not match its photograph exactly, and it will shift in tone over the first year or two as the wood reacts to light. It also expands and contracts slightly with the seasons. All of that is the material behaving as it should, and it is the reason a solid piece lasts decades longer than a veneered one.

This custom table I received was beautifully made. It is sturdy and functional, and looks quite nice with a decent matte finish. The quality of the white oak is excellent. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, it took more than 3 months for me to finally receive the table after the initial order. That is the main reason I'm giving 4 stars rather than 5. The quality of the table itself is certainly 5 stars.

We couldn’t be happier with the custom tabletop we had made! It’s a stunning blend of purple heart and walnut, finished beautifully with Rubio Monocoat. The craftsmanship is absolutely top-notch — every detail is perfect. He built it exactly to our specifications, carefully gluing 1-inch-wide, 84-inch-long alternating pieces that give it a truly one-of-a-kind look. Beyond the incredible quality, it’s inspiring to see a young local woodworker building such heirloom-quality pieces. His passion, skill, and story really shine through in his work. It feels great to support a local artist who’s creating furniture that will last for generations. Highly recommend — this table is both a work of art and a piece of Tennessee craftsmanship we’ll treasure for years to come!

The table I had received from Kieran is exquisitely well built, and one of a kind no two tables are alike. The warm hues of the colors of the wood in dark brown, light brown, and light yellow brings out the table's looks. You cannot go wrong in a custom built table, it is one good investment.

I was not familiar with Padauk wood. I am pleased. The reddish purple hue is a nice pop to the coaster set.

Ambrosia maple is another wood I was not familiar with. Now it is one of my favorites. Basically a lighter wood but has dark tones in it.

This craftsman’s coasters are a bit thicker than many others, which I like. Provides extra protection to your table surface. Particularly if you use for a hot drink or candle.

Whereas I am using the coasters as coasters, I can’t help but think if you are going to have Kieran build a furniture piece, purchasing a coaster/coasters would be a great way to see the wood. I think it might help in deciding which wood you would like to use.
